The Grand Rapids Police Department is asking the public to take down signs threatening criminals will be "shot on sight".

They posted a notice to Facebook, saying they've received reports of these signs throughout Grand Rapids.

GRPD say they do not condone threats of violence, even if the intent is to try to prevent crime. They also remind the public that it is against city ordinance to attach any unauthorized signs on poles or public property.

According to Fox 17, the signs have been spotted in the Belknap Park area.

The signs read:

"Thieves beware. Bait cars are in the area. Anyone caught stealing from a vehicle or home will be shot on sight. Please carry ID so your next of kin can easily be notified of the deceased."
