It's that time of year where everyone is flocking to the gym to get in shape in hopes to keep up with their resolution. But before you go around yelling "new year, new me" make sure you're not getting duped.

Since this is the time where most people are signing up for gym memberships the BBB has some tips to avoid falling for a scam. A representative from the BBB of West Michigan told WZZM that the biggest thing to pay attention to is the cancellation policy.

Something similar happened a few years back with West MI based Family Fitness when several people reported them for bad business practices. As a result, In April of this year they were ordered to pay $220,000 by the Attorney General's office.

Before signing anything the BBB says to do the following:

  • Determine your fitness goals that way you can choose a gym that accommodates your needs.
  • Figure out priorities (location, hours, gym equipment, classes)
  • Check BBB's website to see their ratings and what previous customers had to say.
  • Take a tour
  • Ask about free trials that way you can determine if that particular gym is a good fit
  • Don't feel coerced
  • Calculate the true costs
  • Understand the terms and read the contract carefully
