Local W. MI Shelter Helped Rescue Over 100 Dogs from a Puppy Mill

Over 100 dogs are now safe thanks to the Humane Society of West Michigan and BISSELL Pet Foundation for their collaborative efforts.

The Humane Society told us that the puppy mill was located in St. Landry, Louisiana, a parish about an hour-and-a-half northwest of Baton Rouge. The mill was breeding Poodles, Pekingese, and Shih-Tzus in very poor conditions.

...stacked in 2x2 cages with no access to bedding, and little human contact. They were all matted and dirty, dehydrated, and some even had serious infections, wounds, or eye and dental issues.

Humane Society says several shelters came together to rescue and rehabilitate these dogs. They were examined by a vet, vaccinated, received medical attention, and bathed. Thankfully, every single one survived and the dogs were transported to different rescues where they have a second chance on life. 10 of those puppies were brought to the Humane Society of West Michigan, along with two of St. Landry's long-term dogs, and all of them will soon be available to adopt and ready for their furever homes. Marketing & Communications Director, Brianna Shahly, says that puppy mill dogs can be hard to spot because they come in various forms, whether you buy one from a pet store or online. If you can it's always an amazing feeling giving a shelter animal a home, but if adoption isn't the route you choose to take, it's imperative to do your research to make sure the breeder/pet store is reputable.
