Another event that makes summer summer in West Michigan has been canceled due to COVID-19.

The Ionia Free Fair, which was set to take place July 16-25, 2020, was officially canceled by organizers on Friday, May 15, 2020.

In a letter posted to their Faceook page, organizers said that they could not hold out on making a decision any longer. They cited concerns for the health and well-being of the community and the new norms for social distancing as some of the reasons that they made the decision to cancel this year's event. They stated,

It was a painstaking process, but in the end there were too many factors beyond our control.

The good news is that you'll be able to get your hands on some fair food this weekend at the fair grounds. Our sister station, WITL, reports that food will be available both Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. until 8 p.m. The same event was held last weekend at the fair grounds and drew in droves of people from around west and mid-Michigan.

This isn't the first large even in Michigan to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Holland's Tulip Time was canceled for the first time in its 91-year history, the annual walk over the Mackinac Bridge Labor Day weekend was canceled this week, and Traverse City's annual National Cherry Festival was canceled, as well. Rothbury's Electric Forest Festival was initially postponed, but has since been canceled due to issues with finding a date to reschedule.
