Is Elton John ready to call it quits? Depends on who you ask. After saying he was “done” publicly on Tuesday, he backtracked on his words only one day later.

According to Britain’s Mirror, while Sir Elton was performing at the Festival de Carcassone in France on Tuesday, John told the crowd, “No more shows, no more music, no more songs.”  He added that he was “too old to be a pop star” and going to spend the rest of his time with his family (his partner David Furnish, and their two children, three-year-old Zachary and 18-month-old Elijah).

The good news? His rep is saying something different ABC News. “He’s not retiring,” she said. “Elton was only joking.”  Of course, this isn’t the first time that the Rocketman has said such things. He had also announced that he was retiring back in 1977, but it didn’t take hold then either. Then, as recently as 2012, he said that he would consider quitting when Zachary, his only son at the time, began school.

Elton’s current European tour runs through the end of July. He will begin a month-long trek across North America in September, and will head back to Europe in November. Elton John will close out the year with a show at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Dec. 31.
