Is It Legal For A Bear To Steal Your Deer In Michigan? [Video]
Who's gonna tell him he can't?
Here's the saga of a man, his 6-point prize buck and a hungry black bear.
John Wardynski took his spot in the woods in Alcona County last Saturday, November 18, hoping for what all hunters hope for during firearms deer season, a clean shot at a big buck.
He got that. And bagged a six pointer. Beautiful!
John picks up the story from there on his Facebook page:
"I walked down my shooting lane to check the spot where I shot my buck. Turning to see the line of site of my shot, there was a bear standing next to my pop up blind. The bear came down the ridge, then proceeded to parallel me as I walked my blood trail. Thought it was pretty cool to see a bear that close, so I started videoing with my iPhone."
And then he realized something, they were both headed to the same place, where the dead buck laid.
Wardynski then started applying old school woods logic: scare the bear sow away by making a bunch of noise.
Several times I tried shouting, whistling, breaking brush. She would not leave. At one point she was 35-40 (feet) from me. Backing away a few yards, still videoing, I could see the bear standing on a log over my deer. Tried again to get her to leave but (she) came towards me.
He even tried firing his 9mm rifle in the air a few times to chase it off, but she wouldn't budge. Mike then watched helplessly as she pawed at the still warm deer, eventually dragging it away. His only wish was to claim the rack, but he never did find it.
He took an empathetic attitude toward the bear when he posted later,
The biologist said the berry crop failed & the oak mast is at 3 year low. She's hungry.
And he wasn't, so she wins.
Wardynski's no novice to the hunting game. He's been heading into the woods for over 50 years, and says he's never seen anything like this.
Firearms deer season runs until next Thursday, November 30.
