Cargill Meat Solutions Ground Beef Recall

Now the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service is alerting the public that Cargill Meat Solutions is recalling approximately 16,243 pounds of raw ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.

The company says of the potential contamination that "previously segregated product had been inadvertently utilized in the production of ground beef."

E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause:

    • Dehydration
    • Bloody diarrhea
    • Abdominal cramps

The symptoms will usually arrive 2-8 days after exposure to the organism.

While most people recover within a week, some develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This condition can occur in people of any age but is most common in children under 5-years old and older adults.
