Rad Bagels, a "radical bagel shop" from the owners of Field & Fire Bakery, is permanently closing at the Grand Rapids Downtown Market.

Field & Fire first opened in the Downtown Market at 435 Ionia Ave. SW in 2013. Since then, they've expanded to open a cafe on Monroe Ave. Field & Fire specializes in authentic breads and pastries, focusing on using local, organic ingredients.

They carried that mission to Rad Bagels, creating "wild flavors" using organic ingredients, whole grains, and sourdough.

Radical Bagels first opened in January 2023. At the time, Field & Fire co-owner Shelby Kibler told Grand Rapids Business Journal,

We’ve been looking for a way to produce something new and exciting and grow as a company. This new venture will allow us to expand how we serve this community, in a beautiful space with tons of natural light, and take bagels and bagel sandwiches to the next level.

Rad Bagels served up bagels like Gochujang-Scallion, Jalapeno Cheddar, Blueberry, and Parmesan-Rosemary. The menu also included bagel sandwiches and waffle creations.

Rad Bagel's last day in business is Saturday, Feb. 17, 2024.

The owners shared news of the closure to Facebook, saying,

This Saturday will be our last day of operation.
It's been rad. We'll miss you. And we'll miss these rad ass bagels.
If anyone is interested in our concept and might consider purchasing the brand... artwork, recipes, equipment, etc. Please message us.
Catch you on the flip side.

According to MLive, a representative from the Downtown Market said in a statement,

The Downtown Market works hard to ensure that every tenant has the opportunity to be successful. For Rad Bagels, the Market created an intentional, soft-landing approach in order to help reduce risk and exposure to both of Shelby and Julie’s businesses at the Downtown Market. We were delighted to help support the Rad Bagels experiment and experience.
