Garry and Kristal Boyd were well on their way to opening The Unicorn Tavern - and then the pandemic hit.

The Grand Haven Tribune reports that the Boyds were unable to get a loan to make their unique eatery a reality. Finally, in 2021, they found a bank that would give them a loan and construction resumed on the new restaurant.

According to the Grand Haven Tribune,

The restaurant draws inspiration from owners Garry and Kristal Boyd’s children – including Mackenzie, who died at age 7 due to adrenal gland failure in 2017. Garry previously referred to Mackenzie as a unicorn – 'she made everyone’s lives better.'

The new restaurant features unicorn artwork on the front of the building, located at 415 S. Beechtree St. There are also tributes to their 14-year-old daughter, Charlie Rae, with a mermaid tiki bar; and 11-year-old C.J., with a dragon-themed BBQ section.

The menu is Belgian themed, with vegan and vegetarian options, and designed by Executive Chef, Scott Petersen - who goes by Chef Scotty.

Chef Scotty's last position was as Chef and part owner of SpeakEZ Lounge in Grand Rapids.

At The Unicorn Tavern, you'll find featuring scratch made comfort food like burgers and fries - the owners say they are "proper Belgian frites".

They also serve family style meals that will include chicken and waffles, cassoulet (a stew featuring beans and several types of meat), and a “tommy for the table” – a 32-ounce, dry-aged tomahawk steak served with fries and other sides, the Grand Haven Tribune reports.

The bar menu includes European wines and craft gins.

The Unicorn Tavern is set to open to the public Saturday, February 4, at 11am!
