Meet Kimmy Gibbler! She is the sweetest little girl and has been waiting quite a while to find her perfect forever home. Kimmy has had a rough past and has the scars to show it, but despite all she's been through, Kimmy still has so much love to give!

Her foster dad says, “Kimmy is popular with the kids in my neighborhood and has been very sweet and calm while 4 or 5 kids all come up to pet her. She loves meeting new friends when they come into the house. Her favorite thing is to play fetch with her red Kong ball. She also loves spending a long time cuddled up on the couch, resting her head on my lap, and chasing squirrels in her sleep. She is so sweet all the time and anyone who meets her quickly gets their heart melted!”

Kristen, one of our most long-term volunteers, is an amazing adoption counselor. She says, "I have been volunteering as an Adoption Counselor at HSWM for 10 years and will be starting on my 11th year here! I absolutely love being around the staff, other volunteers, and of course, the animals. It's extremely rewarding to be a part of helping someone find a new family member for their home. I get to see the animals interact with their potential families, and love seeing adoption updates--especially the animals that have been with us for a long time. Beyond seeing animals go home, I absolutely enjoy learning and gaining any experience and knowledge I can. There's no other place I would rather volunteer for!"

If you'd like to join our Adoption Counselor family, volunteers must be 18 or older, and willing to dedicate two or more hours per week--anytime during our open hours. Visit our website at hswestmi.org/volunteer to learn more, and email volunteer@hswestmi.org to sign up!

Cold Weather Safety

It's hard to believe, but winter is already on its way, and with temperatures dropping fast and snow already falling, be sure you keep your furry friends safe during cold snaps!

Make sure that any outdoor pets, (especially working or community cats) have a warm, dry shelter to hunker down in when temperatures drop. You can purchase these online or make your own if you’re on a budget! During colder temperatures, don’t shave your pet, their fluffy coats keep them cozy and warm. When taking your pup out on a walk, be sure to protect their paws with booties or petroleum jelly, and try to keep baths to a minimum to avoid overdrying your pet’s skin.

It’s not necessarily true for ALL breeds, (huskies, malamutes, and other double-coated dogs, we’re looking at you) but a good rule of thumb is if it’s too cold for you to be outside, it’s probably too cold for your pets too. Michigan weather is crazy, so stay warm and safe out there!

LOOK: Here Are 30 Foods That Are Poisonous to Dogs

To prepare yourself for a potential incident, always keep your vet's phone number handy, along with an after-hours clinic you can call in an emergency. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center also has a hotline you can call at (888) 426-4435 for advice.

Even with all of these resources, however, the best cure for food poisoning is preventing it in the first place. To give you an idea of what human foods can be dangerous, Stacker has put together a slideshow of 30 common foods to avoid. Take a look to see if there are any that surprise you.
