This Christmas Decoration Could Make Michigan Pets Sick During The Holidays

How do we get closer to the holiday season? We are starting to see more stores, get their Christmas decorations, set up and ready for after Halloween when the entire United States goes into full-on Christmas mode. With all those decorations, it’s important to note that there may be some out there that can be hazardous to the health of our pets at home.

Obviously, we always want to keep an eye on our dogs and cats and make sure that none of these decorations can cause a choking hazard, and if they can, they are placed out of reach from those pets, but there is one plant that is synonymous with Christmas that can definitely get your pet sick here in Michigan.

The Culprit

Poinsettias are a red and green decorative plant that symbolizes Christmas but unfortunately, they can be mildly toxic to cats and dogs, and if they are able to chew on the plants or flowers, they can cause vomiting, drooling, lethargy, or slowness, decreased appetite, diarrhea, and sap in the eye.

No Need For An ER Visit

Luckily, poinsettia poisoning has a relatively low toxicity so there’s never any need to take your pets to the vet if you think they may have become sick from chewing on them. Besides, there is no antidote for the poisoning so they will just have to do like we do and pound some Gatorade, or in their case water and let it work through their system. They'll make it through.
