If child-you was anything like child-us, you probably wore out at least 20 copies of your parents' The Sound of Music VHS tapes until they eventually stopped buying them for you out of sheer frustration. It's the kind of musical that has managed to transcend generation and gone on to become a truly beloved classic, so it only makes sense that its 50th anniversary would be honored at the 2015 Oscars. And who better to honor a musical with such memorable songs, performances and voices than a pop star who can seriously sing?

Lady Gaga took to the stage to perform a medley of songs from The Sound of Music, and from the very first note of the titular track, we knew we were in for something truly spectacular. Because have you ever heard Gaga sing? When we say sing, we mean really sing. As over-the-top as Gaga can be in dress and in feeling and in, well, pretty much everything, the truth of her magic is that she doesn't really need any of it. The gimmicks are an added visual treat -- they're a way of catching our attention and keeping things fun and as people who seriously love the campy side of all things pop music, we appreciate the meat dress and the egg costume and everything else that come with it. But when an artist can tone it down entirely and blow our minds the way Gaga did tonight, it's a truly impressive thing.

Armed with nothing but a microphone and her phenomenal vocals, Gaga launched into a compilation of some of our favorite songs, "The Sound of Music," "Favorite Things," "Edelweiss" and "Climb Every Mountain." She kept it simple, choosing to let the focus rest on the songs, really honoring and respecting the movie she was paying tribute to. It was one of our absolute highlights of the evening -- the tears streaming down our faces by the time Gaga was done were a clear indication of that.
