Lynyrd Skynyrd to Embark on Farewell Tour
Lynyrd Skynyrd are set to make one last tour. They've announced the first leg of the Last of the Street Survivors Farewell Tour, which will take place this spring and summer.
“It’s hard to imagine, after all these years, the band that Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins and myself started back in Jacksonville, would resonate for this long and to so many generations of fans," guitarist Gary Rossington said. "I’m certain they are looking down from above, amazed that the music has touched so many."
Singer Johnny Van Zant added, “We’ve been blessed by these great songs and the messages they carry to the fans. It’s been a true honor to try and fill in my brother’s footsteps for the past 31 years, keeping the music and his spirit alive.”
The tour will begin on May 4 at the Coral Sky Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach, Fla., and conclude Sept. 1 at the Cellairis Amphitheatre at Lakewood in Atlanta. Tickets for most dates go on sale to the general public on Feb. 2 at 10AM, with a pre-sale for Citi card members taking place from Jan. 30 at 10AM until Feb. 1 at 10PM. The exceptions are the July 20 show in Mansfield, Mass., where tickets go on sale at 11AM, and the Aug. 10 date in Detroit, where tickets go on sale on Feb. 3. The complete calendar is listed below, and you can get full ticketing information, including VIP packages, at the band's website.
Throughout the tour, Lynyrd Skynyrd will share the stage with many of their friends, including Kid Rock, Bad Company, Marshall Tucker Band, 38 Special, Hank Williams Jr., Charlie Daniels Band, Blackfoot and Blackberry Smoke.
Rossington has been beset by health problems lately. Last November, the band canceled two shows due to an undisclosed medical emergency, and several issues with his heart, including a heart attack in October 2015, have sidelined the band in recent years.
In conjunction with the tour, Lynyrd Skynyrd will release a single called "The Last of the Street Survivors." Further details on the song, and which acts will be at which shows, are forthcoming.
UPDATE 4/21: Lynyrd Skynyrd revealed that the their last-ever concert will be Sept. 2 at EverBank Field in their hometown of Jacksonville, Fla. Kid Rock and Jason Aldean have been announced as the opening acts, with others to be named later.
