There's no doubt there are some words associated with our state that are tough to pronounce, like 'Hamtramck' and 'Sault Sainte Marie', but do we really need know how to pronounce 'Big Rapids'?

The State of Michigan has a new official state pronunciation page, and its a little too thorough.

The online directory features over 2200 words that are phonetically pronounced when you click on them. It was compiled by the Michigan Braille and Talking Book Library and can be accessed through the State of Michigan's Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs web site.

"We initially developed the 'You Say it How in Michigan?' guide for narrators across the country during audio book production to get Michigan name and place pronunciations right," said Susan Chinault, manager of the Braille and Talking Book Library recently told MLive.com. "Actually the guide is invaluable for anyone, especially since Michigan has so many unique names that can be mispronounced."

Agreed. But we also have a lot of words that we don't need any assistance with, such as, 'Acme'. But I guess a list that's too big is better than one that doesn't have enough.

Here's our popular video from a year ago where people in Texas attempted to say some common Michigan terms.
