A two-year-old little girl was saved from a potential disaster by a Michigan state trooper who saw the danger and acted quickly.

Sergeant Joseph Richards was on duty in Mitchell Township near Alpena last Friday when he spotted the tot cross a busy road up ahead.

According to state police, as Richards approached her, she turned back onto the road and didn’t realize a dump truck was coming right toward her. He stopped his patrol car, jumped out, and was able to grab the toddler, just as the truck passed by after locking its brakes up trying to avoid her.

The girl’s mom was nearby and tells police she only lost track of her daughter for a few seconds. Investigators credit Richards’ quick response with preventing a tragedy.
