A new brewery is coming to Beer City USA! Michigan's first fully-owned black brewery is set to open in Grand Rapids next week, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Terry Rostic and Jamaal Ewing of Black Calder Brewing Co. will release their Black IPA on Black Friday. The 7% alcohol by volume brew only be available at Broad Leaf Local Beer in Kentwood for the next few months; Rostic and Ewing then plan to expand to other Michigan breweries.

For over a decade, Rostic and Ewing have been a part of Michigan's craft beer scene, visiting and supporting local breweries, and experimenting with their own home brews.

Ewing says in a statement,

The craft beer industry was full of flavor, community, and creativity. The passion that brewers, owners, and staff put into creating a unique experience was refreshing. What we didn’t see were diversity and themes that spoke to the culture that we represent.

The pair say their motto is simple: Make dope beer for dope people.

Rostic shares,

“Black Calder Brewing Company was established to make great beer and provide a platform for innovation, art, culture, and inclusion in the craft beer industry. We appreciate the significance of being recognized as Michigan’s first Black-owned brewery. It’s something Michigan and the craft beer industry has been longing for, but it’s not the only thing we want to be known for.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Rostic and Ewing hope to open a physical location for Black Calder Brewing Co. in Grand Rapids next year. Their plan is to offer offer a variety of beers, from imperial stouts to fruited ales to kettle sours to craft ciders, as well as IPAs and lagers.

Black Calder Brewing Co.'s Black IPA, which is a dark beer dry-hopped with Mosaic and Idaho 7 hops, is available for pre-order now here. It will be available for curbside pickup Friday, starting Nov. 27 at Broad Leaf Local Beer, 2885 Lake Eastbrook Blvd. in Kentwood.
