Yesterday, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced a new case of EEE in Kent County as aerial treatment for mosquitoes carrying Eastern Equine Encephalitis has been completed in Michigan.

New confirmed cases of EEE include one in a Cass County resident and a total of five cases in horses in Jackson, Kent and Tuscola counties.

Aerial treatment for EEE in Michigan has been completed and additional aerial treatment is not planned at this time. Weather conditions are not ideal. Aerial treatment works best when evening and overnight temperatures are 50 degrees or above.

It's important to note that while cooler weather is bad for aerial treatment, mosquitoes carrying EEE are still active.

The total area treated in Michigan covered more than 557,000 acres in 14 counties.

Treatment was done in parts of Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Calhoun, Cass, Jackson, Kent, Lapeer, Livingston, Montcalm, Newaygo, St. Joseph, Van Buren and Washtenaw counties. Fort Custer Training Center, which is in both Calhoun and Kalamazoo counties, was also treated.
