UPDATE: The National Weather Service has extended the Winter Storm Warning for much of West Michigan through 10a.m. Friday. Heavy lake effect snow is expected into Friday morning, with total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches. Winds may reach 45 mph, mainly from Muskegon south.

Original Story: It's been a snowy start to the new year, and more is headed our way. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect 4a.m. Wednesday through 7a.m. Thursday.

The National Weather Service is predicting strong winds as high as 50 mph and total snow accumulations of four to nine inches in Kent, Muskegon, Ottawa, Newaygo, Oceana, Mason, and Lake Counties.

In addition, a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Van Buren, Kalamazoo, Barry, Ionia, Montcalm, Mecosta, and Osceola Counties. Strong winds are expected and snow accumulations of two to four inches.

According to NWS, snow showers will develop after 4a.m Wednesday morning. Blowing and drifting snow could cause near blizzard conditions, especially along and west of of U.S. 131. Scattered power outages are possible, and wind chills will drop into the single digits.

Localized heavy lake effect snow and hazardous travel conditions could continue into Thursday and Thursday night for portions of West Michigan, again especially around and west of 131.

Looking ahead, arctic air and significant lake effect snow may return again for Sunday night and Monday.

Ahead of the storm Wednesday, if you have to travel it's recommended to stock your car with an extra flashlight, food, and water in case of an emergency.
