Despite failing to outlive its progenitor, Futurama joined the ranks of Matt Groening’s iconic animated works to follow The Simpsons, and Netflix may have given both another sibling. Reports confirm Groening is readying a new animated series for Netflix, though the concept remains under lock and key.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix is preparing a two-season, twenty-episode pickup for the new mystery series, one we’d expect to coincide with the streaming service’s upcoming presentation at the TCA press tour panel. It wouldn’t be the first Netflix series with a two-season order, though the prep time may aid in the animation process.

Apart from their children’s programming, Netflix has had notable success with animation in recent years, from the critically-revered BoJack Horseman, to recent debut F is for Family. Certainly, the Groening name comes with a high pedigree, though it remains to be seen exactly how much involvement Groening would have, as was the case with Futurama.

We’ll see what shakes out in the next few days, but what might Groening have come up with for Netflix?
