Better let granny know to be on the lookout!

WZZM reports that a new phone scam is targeting grandparents in West Michigan. The Wyoming Department of Public Safety and the Metro Fraud Identity Theft Team have already issued a warning to residents.

So far, there have been two reports of a man going by "Steven" who is telling his victims that their grandkid is in jail. Both victims purchased gift cards and were told the money from that would be used to go towards attorney services to get their grandchild out of jail. The suspect had the victims give him the security code on the back of the gift cards.

WZZM says that thus far, over $20,000 has been lost.

If you receive a call like this hang up immediately.

If you have any information in regards to the scam you are asked to call the Wyoming Department of Public Safety at 616.530.7300 or Silent Observer at 616.774.2345.

On another note, be on the lookout for another scam that I've been receiving calls from for the past few weeks. Almost everyday I have been getting a call from a number with a (419) area code which comes up from Ashland, Ohio and they never leave a voicemail. When I looked it up on Whitepages.com it was flagged as a scam.

When they wouldn't stop calling I finally answered (last week) and its a young-sounding man who claims to be with Comcast. DO NOT give any information to this person. They will try and tell you about "deals" to get signed up for. The funny part is after I told him not to call me anymore he called me back later that afternoon asking for another person.
