Firstly, Wallethub, the finance website behind the study points out what Americans overall are worried about:

The biggest source of stress for Americans in 2021 is money problems, according to a recent WalletHub survey. The COVID-19 pandemic, which took first place last year, has slipped to second, which makes sense considering the progress the U.S. has made with vaccination and reopening

To determine their ranking, Wallethub compared the 50 states across 41 key indicators of stress. They looked at data like average hours worked per week, share of adults getting adequate sleep, job security, divorce rate, and crime rate.

Wallethub ranks Michigan as the 15th most stressed state.

What's got us worried? The Mitten State's most stressed score is in the area of health and safety.

Michigan ranks 10th in work-related stress, 31st in money-related stress, 14th in family-related stress, and 9th in health and safety-related stress.

In comparison, Nevada - the most stressed out state - ranks 3rd in work-related stress, 8th in money-related stress, 1st in family-related stress, and 7th in health and safety-related stress.

Here are the ten most stress states, according to Wallethub:

  1. Nevada
  2. Lousiana
  3. New Mexico
  4. West Virginia
  5. Mississippi
  6. Oklahoma
  7. Tennessee
  8. California
  9. Kentucky
  10. Texas
