This Sunday, September 16th at Millennium Park in Grand Rapids, the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention (AFSP) will be hosting it's 15th Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk.

The AFSP started these walks in 1987 and now they are being held all across the country.  The walk is to raise awareness, educate and reduce stigma associated with mental health and depression.  In addition to being about suicide prevention, the Out of the Darkness Walks are about turning HOPE into ACTION.

Both online and in person registrations are still open.  You can register online for the walk at AFSP.org/GrandRapids (registration closes online at 12:00pm on Friday, September 15th).  If you miss the online deadline, or just want to register in person, you can do so at the walk on Sunday between 11am and 1pm, when the walk begins.

These walks are for anyone to attend, and more importantly, for anyone who has been touched by suicide.  The walk is a time for reflection, remembrance, healing, grieving, support and awareness to educate our community.

Suicide is the only cause of death that has been trending up instead of down in Michigan and now it is the 10th leading cause of death.
