Let's face it, there were a lot of reasons to have a drink in 2020, but Michiganders took drinking to a whole new level compared to most other states.

Drugabuse.com released a chart of the average standard alcoholic drinks consumed per person in each state during 2020 and Michigan ranked 10th on that list.

  1. Alaska - 1404 alcoholic drinks
  2. Rhode Island - 1261 alcoholic drinks
  3. New Jersey - 1130 alcoholic drinks
  4. Oklahoma - 1106 alcoholic drinks
  5. Arkansas - 1076 alcoholic drinks
  6. Illinois - 1050 alcoholic drinks
  7. Wisconsin - 1025 alcoholic drinks
  8. Montana - 1023 alcoholic drinks
  9. Vermont - 1014 alcoholic drinks
  10. Michigan - 956 alcoholic drinks

As a country, Americans drank an average of 17 drinks per week in 2020.  Michigan was a bit higher than that with an average of 18.3 drinks a week, or about 2.6 drinks per day throughout 2020.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), "Heavy drinking is defined as consuming 8 or more drinks per week for a woman or 15 or more drinks per week for a man."
