Something you rarely hear of is a case of polio but recently a rare case of a polio-like may have been found in a child in Ottawa County.

According to FOX 17, there have been four suspected cases of this illness found in Michigan. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services say the one case in Ottawa County is called Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM). The other counties with suspected polio cases are Ingham, Macomb and Oakland.

The Centers for Disease Control say it will take several weeks before tests will confirm the cases of AFM in Michigan.

Cases of polio found in America have been rare or nonexistent over the years but in the past year, 22 states have reported over 60 cases of AFM. Most cases have been found in children about a week after they had a fever and a respiratory infection. Some of the children experienced muscle weakness or paralysis to the face, neck, back or arms and legs.

CDC's Dr. Nancy Messonnier said, "It is a pretty dramatic disease but fortunately most kids recover."

The CDC say they are still unaware of what is causing these outbreaks.
