It was an exciting end to the season as Rockford-Sparta High School gymnastics team won the state championship in Rockford on Friday.

Rockford-Sparta missed the finals last year after finishing in fourth place in 2013. Their return this year was both exciting and successful.

Rockford-Sparta brought home the championship with a close victory over second place Canton, 147.975 - 146.225.

“We just wanted to close it up, and we were all trying to stay confident so we could finish it off and do our best,” Rockford-Sparta junior Madi Myers told MHSAA's Second Half. “We were a little bit nervous, but we pulled it off.”

West Michigan also took home a couple of second-place and one third-place team finishes in high school sports finals over the weekend.

West Ottawa finished second to Birmingham Brother Rice in the Division 1 Boys Swimming and Diving Finals at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. West Ottawa senior West Ottawa senior Tabahn Afrik won the 50 and 100 freestyle events, having won in the 100 and 200 last year at the state championships.

East Grand Rapids took third behind titlist Bloomfield Hills' Cranbrook Kingswood and Chelsea, with Hamilton fourth and Grand Rapids Christian fifth in the Division 3 Boys Swimming and Diving Finals in Rochester Hills. East Grand Rapids’ Andy McGregor won the 100 and 200 freestyle events and was on the winning 200 freestyle relay with Braden Wiener, Christian Bart and Jack Filion. Hamilton’s Alec Nyboer repeated in the 100 butterfly and Catholic Central’s Joey Puglessi won the 100 backstroke.

Grandville lost to Detroit Catholic Central in the Division 1 Hockey Championship game 5-2 in Plymouth. Both teams continued to remember Ryan Fischer, the Grandville High School student/athlete who died last year, and share a special bond through his memory.

Congratulations to Rockford-Sparta, West Ottawa and Grandville on amazing seasons!
