Now that some of the COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted in Michigan, theaters can reopen. That also means that the Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium, located at the Grand Rapids Public Museum, will be reopening.

Beginning on Tuesday, December 22nd, the Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium will be welcoming visitors on a limited capacity basis.

The Planetarium will host multiple shows every week. This week will include the holiday show, "Let it Snow," as well as other shows "Ice Worlds", "Incoming!", and "Under Starlit Skies".

Just in time for the holidays, the “Let it Snow” program is a festive light show. It features a variety of classic songs from greats like Chuck Berry, Burl Ives, Brenda Lee, and Frank Sinatra. There is also a stunning finale by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. The music is visually enhanced with animation, special effects, and full-dome scenery.

Also showing is "Ice Worlds". The delicate balance between ice, water and the existence of life has been a topic of scientific inquiry for generations. Travel to the Arctic and Antarctic regions, examine the ecosystems that exist and thrive there, and learn how their survival is connected with our own. See how the existence of ice shapes the landscape and the natural systems on other planets and moons in our Solar System. "Ice Worlds" is the winner of five Telly Awards. The presentation is narrated by Academy Award nominated actress, Emily Watson.

"Incoming" explores asteroids, comets, and meteors. California Academy of Sciences developed cutting-edge visualizations based on real-time data from current NASA missions to show us the dynamic story of our Solar System. A live show that was created by the Grand Rapids Public Museum accompanies the movie portion of "Incoming!" in partnership with NASA scientist Brent Bos. He is currently studying asteroids and grew up right here in West Michigan.

"Under the Stars" is a live presentation that explores the wonders of the night sky. In each season you will learn tips and tricks that will help you find planets and constellations from your own backyard. Fly to the far reaches of the solar system to get a closer look at planets, moons, and more.

Tickets for the Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium are $2 for Museum members, $4 each with general admission to the Grand Rapids Public Museum, and $5 each for planetarium only tickets.

The Grand Rapids Public Museum is located alongside the Grand River in downtown Grand Rapids at 272 Pearl Street, NW. Additional information about the museum and planetarium can be found on the grpm.org website.
