The South Haven police say four people jumped off the South Haven pier on Friday, May, 13th and when they got out of Lake Michigan they were each handed a ticket for $1,000.

Earlier this year the South Haven City Council approved an ordinance that prohibits diving or jumping from piers. WWMT 3 reports that South Haven can also close beaches and piers during dangerous conditions, according to the ordinance.

When public beach waters are closed, signs will be posted around the areas. Those who go into or try to go into the water will face a municipal civil infraction and a $1,000 fine.

Are There Any Exceptions To The South Haven Ordinance?

Yes, there is one exception. If public beach waters are closed due to severe weather or wave height, people taking part in board sports can still go into the water at their own risk. They still must follow safety rules and have safety equipment.
