Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer will try and recreate their 2012 magic one more time.

The Pair Paced The Tigers To The 2012 World Series

Justin Verlander on Monday signed a two-year deal to pitch the 2023 season for the New York Mets after spending the last five seasons in Houston, pitching for the Astros.

The signing reunites Verlander with his old rotation mate, Max Scherzer, in New York. Each pitcher won a Cy Young Award as the best American League pitcher while with the Tigers, Verlander in 2011, and Scherzer in 2013.

In between, the pair pitched the Tigers to the American League pennant in 2012.

They were swept in four games by the San Francisco Giants in the 2012 World Series.

Scherzer Left Detroit In 2015, Verlander In 2017

The glory years in Detroit were soured by an inability by both to get the big contract they desired, Scherzer eventually left as a free agent in 2015 to sign with the Washington Nationals, where he would win a World Series title in 2019. He also won two more Cy Young Awards as the National League's best pitcher in 2016 and 2017.

He signed a three year deal with the Mets last winter and was 11-5 for the Mets in 2022, as they went to the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

Verlander, meanwhile, was traded to the Houston Astros in 2017, and has won two World Series titles with the Astros, first in 2017, and then again this past season. He also won his third Cy Young Award in 2022, going 18-4 with a stellar 2.21 ERA.
