The 54th annual National Morel Mushroom Festival kicks off in Boyne City, running Thursday through Sunday.

Boyne City has been hosting the festival for more than 50 years and thousands of foragers are expected to flock to the city just for these tasty mushrooms.

Highlights of the festival include guided morel hunts, the Taste of Morels food expo, the Human Society 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) run, craft shows, music and a competitive morel hunt for cash and prizes.

I’ve only hunted and eaten morels once in my life. That was years ago, but the taste still haunts me to this day.

They are delicious!

Here are some factoids and tips for finding morels.
