Not long ago it was rumored that SNL vet Fred Armisen would be the voice of Krang in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (they really couldn’t go with a shorter title there, huh?). We’ve seen the beloved brainy villain in the trailers for the sequels, but we haven’t heard him speak just yet — and there may be a reason for that, as Armisen has apparently been replaced.

Armisen’s casting was rumored back in March when Paramount screened new footage from the film at Wondercon. We haven’t heard anything about the Portlandia star’s involvement with the sequel since then, nor have we heard Krang speak in the trailers. That might be because Krang’s voice work wasn’t complete.

The LA Times reveals that Everybody Loves Raymond vet Brad Garrett is lending his signature baritone to the role of the famous TMNT villain. Although Armisen’s casting was never confirmed by the studio, it’s possible that Garrett was brought in as a late-stage replacement when Armisen’s performance didn’t quite work out. It wouldn’t be the first time that it’s happened — Pixar famously replaced the voice cast of The Good Dinosaur following a major creative change.

Armisen and Garrett have two very distinctive vocal styles, and the entire attitude / posturing of the character could change so easily with a different tone of voice. It seems pretty clear that Paramount is going for an ironic sort of thing with Garrett’s big, booming voice and Krang’s diminutive, off-putting appearance.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows hits theaters on June 3.
