Wings of Mercy West Michigan is a faith based, non-profit volunteer pilot organization dedicated to connecting general aviation pilots with low income patients in need of transportation to distant medical facilities.

Based in Zeeland, Wings of Mercy has flown over 8,000 missions since its founding in 1991. Founded by the late Peter VandenBosch, they have grown from a small group of volunteers to a well respected non-profit organization with a multi-state area of operations.

Two additional Wings of Mercy chapters have been formed to help meet the growing need. Wings of Mercy Minnesota was established in January of 1995 to serve the people of Minnesota. In early 1996, Wings of Mercy Eastern Michigan was formed by a group of pilots in Midland, Saginaw and Bay City.

All services are performed by volunteers; aircraft owners/operators are reimbursed for fuel only (about 1/3 of the actual cost of operating an aircraft), and many refuse even that. Wings of Mercy is funded entirely by charitable contributions.

To raise funds, the Wings of Mercy have several events slated for the end of May. The 20th Annual CareAffaire will take place at Executive Air transport at the Muskegon International Airport on May 30 from 8am until noon. Tickets are just $6, or you can bring the whole family for a $25 donation.

Included in the CareAffaire Events are a 5k run, Pancake Breakfast as well as Airplane and Helicopter rides.
