Wood Season Has Begun a Month Later Than Usual

While some are hunting turkeys or morels, others have started hunting fuel-wood.

According to WOOD, typically you have to pay 20 bucks for a permit to gather fallen wood or old dead trees but since times are tough this year the state of Michigan is offering free permits this year.

Due to the coronavirus, fuel-wood season has started a month later than normal but folks can gather wood beginning May 1.

Here is a link where you can download a free permit. This will allow you to gather trees that are already down in Michigan's state forests. Remember you cannot drive anything into the woods, you have to carry everything back to your vehicle and the wood must already be downed prior to cutting. You are allowed to gather wood up to 200 feet from the road.

It is best to make sure that you know what woods are owned by the state so click here for maps that will let you know where you can cut wood.

You will have 90 days to gather up to five standard cords of wood for personal use and you are not allowed to re-sale any of the wood.
