Your Toaster Is Causing More Pollution Than a Busy Intersection
What random thing in your house can hurt/kill you today? *spins wheel*
Yes. Your toaster is not only causing air pollution but it's even worse than a busy intersection in a major city, according to a new study from the University of Texas in Austin.
The London Times reports that scientists spent an entire day cooking and cleaning and monitored pollutant levels that would occur in a normal house. While all types of cooking is known to cause air pollution, the biggest surprise was that the toaster is the most dangerous... sending toxic fumes the second its turned on, including ethanol.
It led to what would be considered ‘very unhealthy’ air pollution levels if compared to outdoor air quality standards. (via The Sun)
To put into perspective, the World Health Organization (WHO) only recommends 25 micrograms of fine particulates. Burnt toast has 3,000 micrograms! If you must, scientists say to only mildly toast your bread, so it has a light crisp.
In addition to cooking, cleaning solutions/sprays and air plug-in's were found to be dangerous. However, wood-burning stoves and scented candles are some of the worst air pollutants. Dammit! But I love stocking up on those 3-wick candles that smell like mahogany teakwood or a fire-roasted marshmallow.
