Central Michigan University's long standing reputation as a party school was reinforced during a wild 'Welcome Weekend' which saw bottles hurled at police officers, and alcohol citations handed out by the hundreds.

As a Central alumni, I would like to tell you that we were more restrained when we partied on campus in the late '70s, but we weren't. We were stupid idiots then, the only difference is, when the cops showed up at our parties, we left and went home. Now the kids stay and throw things at them.

The Mt. Pleasant Morning Sun reports that opening weekend parties resulted in at least one man being injured by a fleeing car, and 192 alcohol related citations being issued, topping last year's 191 citations, which was a record. Twenty-two arrests were also made.

While the number of citations were up slightly, police said the situation this year was much 'less chaotic' as opposed to year's past. Mt. Pleasant Mayor Jim Holton, who rode along with the police Friday night told the Morning Sun, “I would call it coordinated chaos. This year felt more in control, and I believe that’s directly related to efforts made after last year.”

The police had warned students by going door-to-door prior to this weekend that a new zero tolerance was in place for partying this school year, and that police would be patrolling the student neighborhoods.

Mount Pleasant police and fire departments were assisted by Central Michigan University, Gratiot County, Midland County, Midland City, Clare City and St. Louis police, as well as Michigan State Police Hart and Lakeview posts.

Patrols came in response to residents complaints about the partying. Police officials say no parties were raided, and that all of the arrests and citations were the result of officers simply walking through the student neighborhoods.
