The church is also offering a more traditional Ash Wednesday later on in the evening.

It was first released on his 1979 album Volcano. It reached #35 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #42 on the Easy Listening chart.

The title refers to the fins of metaphorical sharks, i.e. “land sharks,” men who attempt to pick up the woman who is the subject of the song. She is said to feel like a remora due to the proximity of the predators.

“Fins” is one of Buffett’s more popular songs with fans, and is part of “The Big 8″ that he has played at almost all of his concerts. Recorded live versions of the song appear on Feeding Frenzy, Buffett Live: Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and the video Live by the Bay. Buffett usually begins the song with a few bars of the “Main Title” theme from the movie Jaws. Concertgoers typically respond to the chorus line of “fins to the left, fins to the right” by extending their arms above their heads in a fin shape and moving them from left to right. Fin and shark themes have become a prominent part of parrothead (Buffett fan) clothing and gear and feature in several of Buffett’s commercial ventures such as Land Shark Lager beer.

In 2009, Buffett wrote new lyrics to the song for the Miami Dolphins football team. The song is played during home games at Sun Life Stadium, and is used in tandem with the Dolphins’ fight song after every touchdown the team scores.

American Mustache Institute

When someone grows a mustache, all of society benefits, since the visually pleasing facial hair is now on display for all to see. Yet the costs of maintaining a proper lip sweater falls only on the mustachioed individual.

The fine folks at the American Mustache Institute want to change this. So they recently proposed the “Stimulus To Allow Critical Hair Expenses,” or the STACHE ACT, which awards a $250 tax credit to every mustached American. They are also calling for a Million Mustache March in support of the act that will take place in Washington DC on April 1st. (Yup, always a bit suspicious.)

The AMI, who partnered with H&R Block on the proposal, even  drew up a white paper on why the STACHE act is necessary. Here is its summery:

In summary, the grooming habits of Mustached Americans are a clear example of financial, social and environmental responsibility—the triple bottom line. It is appropriate that Congress allow a limited number of deductions to people of Mustached American heritage in recognition of the value that their lifestyle provides to the economy, to society, and to the environment.

I’m not into it at all. Never played, but now that there’s a game for Facebook I could. Meh. Maybe I will. I have to say I see those really oversized Angry Birds Hats they have at Walmart,. Those ALONE have kept me from playing!

Three Dog Night earned 13 gold albums and recorded 21 Billboard Top 40 hits, seven of which went gold. Their first gold record was “One” (US #5), which had been written and recorded by Harry Nilsson. The group had three US #1 songs,: “Mama Told Me Not to Come” (Cory Wells on lead), which was also their only Top 10 hit in the UK; “Joy to the World” (Chuck Negron on lead); and “Black and White” (Danny Hutton on lead). Coincidentally each one featured a different lead singer. Dunhill Records claimed 40 million record albums were sold by the band during this time period.

Conan O’Brien is pretty hard to miss, due to his 6’4 frame and bright orange pompadour. So if you happened to be watching ‘How I Met Your Mother’ last night and thought you spotted the late-night host for a brief moment in the background of the gang’s favorite bar, you certainly weren’t imagining things.

Before the show aired Monday, ‘HIMYM’ star Neil Patrick Harris gave his Twitter followers a hint that something like this was brewing.

“Watch the new episode of HIMYM tonight and try to spot the awesomest of dudes randomly hanging out at MacLaren’s. #dontblink,” Harris tweeted.

In fact, if you caught Harris’ appearance on ‘Conan’ last June, you would’ve known that an O’Brien cameo was coming. During their chat, the two revealed that Conan had won a walk-on role on ‘HIMYM’ in a charity auction they had both attended. When the show’s producers heard that it was Conan who out bid everybody for the prize, they wanted to expand the role from the cameo it had been offered as.

However, Conan told them he thought it would be funnier if it remained a brief un-credited walk on. So that’s the story behind Conan’s very short stint on ‘How I Met Your Mother.’ Check it out below, courtesy of HuffPo.

I remember growing up in Portage we had a ShowBiz Pizza Place, Star World and Putt-Putt. Now I worked at Putt-Putt, so that’s what my favorite was. ShowBiz was sold after some not-so-nice rumors about “extra” ingredients in the ranch dressing on the salad bar surfaced (I will let you figure THAT one out!), and turned into the area’s first Olive Garden. In most cities, the ShowBiz Pizza were turned into CEC’s. In Portage, the Star World (local arcade and pizza place) morphed into CEC’s in the 1990′s.

My kids love ging to CEC’s, like you’d expect. And I have to say I’m pretty good at the football toss.

Van Halen kicked off their 2012 tour with a two-hour blitz of classics and new songs on Saturday night (Feb. 18) in Louisville, Ky., and we’ve got a great set of photos for you from that night.

For the legendary group’s first trek in four years, in support of their long-awaited new studio album ‘A Different Kind of Truth,’ David Lee Roth and the musical Van Halen family (Alex, Wolfgang and Eddie) tore through 22 songs and left the sold-out crowd completely satisfied.

We published both a full concert review and rundown of the set list from the evening already, now you can see the gigantic video screen backdrop we were talking about through these pictures. If Van Halen’s coming to your town we’d strongly suggest you sell your car or cat to get into the show.

Well, JT’s character sang a song in true Bon Iver style to help the baby go to sleep, before ultimately falling asleep himself. Only Beyonce and Jay-Z‘s white butler seemed to really dig the song.

As you can imagine, Prince, played by Fred Armisen, brought Blue Ivy his smirk. Kristen Wiig‘s Taylor Swift persona brought her ‘OMG’ face and Nicki Minaj, as Nasim Pedrad, sung a lullaby along the same style as her crazy Grammys performance. Frankly, baby Blue was probably not that thrilled to be getting any of these gifts.

The rumors started when a photo surfaced of a Civil War-era man who bore a remarkably striking resemblance to the star of ‘National Treasure.’

At first, Cage downplayed the idea, even debunking it on a recent ‘Letterman’ appearance. “I have gotten out of bed in the morning and looked in the mirror just to make sure I was still there, and I was, so that would probably end those rumors,” he said.

But then, he admits there’s a chance he could be a member of the undead. “It’s possible. I don’t make a habit out of drinking people’s blood, though,” he said.

Nice try, Nic. But we’re not entirely sure we believe you. Anybody catch the color of the liquid that Cage is drinking from a glass? That’s right. It’s red.

It’s not a big secret FOX’s lack of popular shows back in the 90′s probably helped the Simpsons stay on the air when if it was released today, if it didn’t get big ratings in the first 4 shows it would have been toast. Yay early 90′s FOX network crap! Take that Parker Lewis!

In an interview with BOOK IT!, Tebow talks about why he picked Green Eggs And Ham: “Pretty much how I learned to read was with Green Eggs And Ham. There were a few others that I loved, but Green Eggs And Ham was definitely my favorite.”

Tebow also talks about his struggles with reading as a child, “I was diagnosed with dyslexia when I was a little boy and so finding ways to overcome that and finding ways to really enjoy reading and finding ways that I can process things — because it has nothing to do with your intelligence, it just has to do with how you process things — for me books like Green Eggs And Ham really helped me to overcome those obstacles.”

In thanks for Tim’s participation, BOOK IT! says it will make a donation to the Tebow’s  charity organization: the Tim Tebow Foundation.

Can you feel that? Oh no, wait, it’s more than a feeling. Yes, that’s right — while work on its long-delayed sixth studio album continues, Boston is returning to the road for a summer tour. As frontman Tom Scholz joked in his announcement to fans, this latest run of dates comes just in time for the end of the world.

“Just 10 months till the end … at least till the end of the Mayan calendar, anyway,” quipped Scholz. “I wonder, did they mean to prophesize the end of the world, or was the December 21st planetary alignment just a convenient place to stop chiseling stone tablets on a really long calendar project? Some people think it is the same thing, so why take a chance? If I was making a bucket list, it would definitely include going out one more time to play some Boston shows — before time runs out!”

For Scholz, who has led the band through countless lineup changes and lawsuits over the years, it’s all about the fans. “I don’t really think the world is going to end this year,” he explained, “but on the off chance the Mayans were on to something, let me take a moment to thank all of you for helping make the Boston experience an awesome ride. One of the best things about Boston to me is its fans; they are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met, and collectively the best crowds anyone could wish to play for.”

Boston’s 2012 lineup includes longtime rhythm and lead guitarist Gary Pihl, bass player Kimberly Dahme and drummer Jeff Neal, who both boast roughly a decade in the band, and singer/keyboard player/percussionist Tommy DeCarlo, who took full responsibility for lead vocals when Stryper’s Michael Sweet ended his three-year association with Boston in 2011. The faces may change, but the hits stay the same — will you be in the audience for any of Boston’s 2012 tour stops?

Even if you aren’t a sports fan, you’ve probably been hearing an awful lot about this Jeremy Lin fellow. The New York Knicks point guard’s completely-out-of-nowhere run began on February 3rd when the-then obscure bench warmer came off the pine to spur the Knicks to a victory over the New Jersey Nets. He was inserted in the starting line-up after that, and since then has led the Knicks — who were previously league laughingstocks — to six more wins in a row.

With this improbable success, the Jeremy Lin story has captured the imagination of all of America. There hasn’t been a sports figure with such sudden cultural relevance since, well, Tim Tebow a couple months ago. Lin is so hot that reportedly Kim Kardashian wants to use him for his fame go out on a date with him. Learn more about the man behind this rampant “lin-sanity.”

He Graduated from Harvard

Part of what makes Lin unique is that he is a Harvard graduate, the first to play in the NBA from that elite institution since 1954. In fact, Lin is the first NBA player from the entire Ivy League since 2003. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t other players in the league who recieved top-flight educations. There are currently 14 players who went to Duke on NBA rosters, and Lin’s New York Knicks backcourt mate Landry Field graduated from Stanford.

He Is One of The First Asian-Americans to Play in the NBA

Jeremy Lin is not the first American-born Asian player in the NBA. That would be 5-foot-7 inch Japanese-American guard Wataru Misaka, who played briefly in 1947. Since then two players with Asian mothers, Raymond Townsend and Rex Walters, have made the Association. But Lin is the first American-born player of Chinese or Taiwanese descent to play in the league, and is probably already basketball’s most famous Asian-American.

He Can Do “The Dougie”

Lin has joined an exclusive club, which includes CNN personality Wolf Blitzer and fellow ‘Sports Illustrated‘ cover model Kate Upton, by having his “Dougie” skills featured in a viral video. While he’s clearly better than Blitzer at the popular dance, how he measures up to Upton probably has a lot to do with whether the viewer is male or female.

He is a Devout Christian

One of the reasons Lin gets linked with Tebow is that, like the Denver Broncos’ Quarterback, Lin is a devout Christian who is open about his faith. After leading the Knicks to their fifth straight win, Lin told reporters “I’m thinking about how I can trust God more. How can I surrender more? How can I bring Him more glory?” Whether or not he’ll kneel in prayer during games and create an internet meme is another story.

The Knicks Almost Cut Him

There have been reports that the Knicks were on the verge of cutting Lin last month. Journeyman guard Mike James recently confirmed that the Knicks contacted him in January about taking Lin’s roster spot, but then decided to keep Lin at the last minute. So “Linsanity” was this close to never happening.

He Was the Editor of His School Paper

Lin was a great basketball player in high school, leading Palo Alto High to the 2006 California state championship. He was also the editor of the school’s paper, The Paly Voice. Lin combined these two achievements in a column he wrote about winning the championship, which The Paly Voice just reprinted.

For whatever reason, folks can’t get enough of making Lin’s last name into blended words like “lin-credible.” In fact, there is now a website called Linwords which generates an almost endless list of these lin-guistic masterpieces. From now on, any time a baby holds a basketball he will be known as a lin-fant.

He’s A Funny Guy

Lin mocked his Harvard pedigree, as well as stereotypes about hard-working Asian high school students, in a comedy short called “How I got Into Harvard.” Lin shot the video in 2011 as a rookie with the Golden State Warriors, and it’s recently become a YouTube favorite. As you can see, Lin is almost as natural in front of the camera as he is running the pick and roll.

He Lived On His Brother’s Couch

When Lin started his improbable run a couple weeks ago his home was a couch in the living room of his older brother’s New York City apartment. Although Lin had signed a $800,000 contract with the Knicks, the money wasn’t guaranteed, so he must have not felt comfortable about committing to his own place in a city with such high rents. Now that he’s feeling a little more sure of himself, Lin just leased a $3,800 a month apartment from former Knick David Lee, which is located next to the team’s practice facility in White Plains, New York.

He might be the real deal

In his first four shots off the bench, Lin had at least 20 points, at least six assists and shot over 50 percent. According to statistician extraordinaire Nate Silver, that has only happened 41 times since 1986, and the players who have accomplished this feat have typically been all-star, if not hall-of-fame level, perfomers. In other words, Jeremy Lin’s no fluke and “lin-sanity” just might be here to stay.

Lindsey Buckingham has released a live version of the song on his 2008 album Live at the Bass Performance Hall.

Jimmy Fallon, guest Rashida Jones, and The Roots performed the song live on the November 26, 2009 episode of Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.

At The Aquabats’ holiday shows in 2009, the band distributed a free CD single of a cover of the song to all attendees. In 2011, the song was used as the music on television advertising for Teletext Holidays in the United Kingdom[1] and subsequently made UK #168 from the live download of the song; it became Buckingham’s first UK “hit” of sorts in nearly 30 years.
