The GRPD is adding a fifth service area to better cover downtown Grand Rapids, Fox 17 reports.

Currently, the City of Grand Rapids is broken into four distinct Service Areas: North, South, East, and West.

The GRPD say a new Central Service area is needed because of the area's increase in residents, businesses, and visitors downtown GR.

Specific boundaries for the new Central Service Area have not yet been announced.

The GRPD said in a Public Information Release on Facebook

The additional service area will provide a primary focused leadership to the downtown area. The new Central Service Area will provide additional accountability and oversight to accommodate the areas’ growth in residential, business populace and better manage the influx of visitors to the downtown area.

Operationally, the only change in the short term will be the promotion of a Lieutenant to the position of Captain, who will lead the Central Service Area. That assignment will be announced at a later date. All Community Policing Specialists will remain in their current assignments."
