Israel employs a defense system called the Iron Dome to intercept rockets fired across its borders. This video shows the Iron Dome shooting down 15 rockets fired presumably by Hamas fighters in Gaza.

The mobile missile-defense system is designed to identify, intercept and destroy short-range projectiles. The Iron Dome even tries to ensure that when it destroys a rocket in midair, it does so over an unpopulated area to prevent falling debris from injuring people or destroying property.

The way it works is a three-step process:

  1. Radar tracks the rocket as it crosses the border.
  2. Advanced software then predicts the rocket's path.
  3. An interceptor missile is fired from the ground at the rocket to destroy it while still airborne.

It's a remarkable feat of technology, in use since March 2011.
