A simple device that attaches to a classroom door could prevent more casualties in a school shooting situation, and it was invented by, and is manufactured in Michigan.

Like many of us, Rob Couturier watched helplessly as the death toll mounted during the Sandy Hook school shootings in December 2012. Shortly thereafter, when his daughter was threatened by someone who was banned from her school grounds, it became personal. So he went to work and invented "The Boot", a device that can lock down a classroom within seconds.

The metal dead bolt can resist up to eight tons of pressure, effectively keeping unwanted guests out of the classroom. "That little metal thing would've saved everyone's lives if it was (at Sandy Hook)," said Couturier, whose company, Lockdown, is based in Fowlerville.

Business is starting to pour in for the fledgling company, and the first West Michigan district to install the devices is the Reeths-Puffer district in Muskegon. "My goal is to have about 250 jobs here in the state of Michigan. Manufacturing is going to stay here, everything is going to stay right here," Couturier told WZZM-TV.

Safer schools, and more jobs for Michigan is a pretty good double play for the new company.
