There’s only one way to sum up this Sunday morning: Slippery and treacherous.

Authorities across West Michigan report ice-, slush- and snow-covered roads, the result of a wintry mix dumped overnight.

The National Weather Service’s Grand Rapids Office is reporting ice-covered environs with as much as 0.5 inch in Barry County, with snow of about 1 inch in Montcalm County just north of Greenville.

At 6:53 a.m., it was reported to be 32 degrees at Gerald R. Ford International Airport with light freezing drizzle, fog and mist. There was 0.12 inch of rain was reported in the previous 12 hours and 0.33 inches since Saturday at the airport, according to the National Weather Service.

It was also 32 degrees with light freezing rain and drizzle at Holland Airport.

Power outages this morning are being reported for more than 25,000 Consumers Energy customers in West Michigan, including 10,000 in Grand Rapids, primarily the Heritage Hill area; East Grand Rapids and Sparta; and another 1,100 in portions of Ottawa County, about 9,000 in Barry County, 3,500 in Montcalm County, according to our news partner WZZM-TV, Channel 13.

The forecast today is for a chance of freezing rain until early afternoon, with snow likely with accumulations of up to 1 1/2 inches this afternoon and tonight. Little or no ice accumulation is expected this morning, weather service officials said.

The high is expected to be no more than the freezing point, and the low is to be about 20 degrees.

On Monday, the National Weather Service is predicting snow showers with accumulation of about an inch during the day and two more inches overnight with a high near 24 and an overnight low of 13.

The forecast for Tuesday and Christmas Day is more of the same, with a chance for snow showers likely.

As for the conditions outside this morning, put simply: “Oh, the weather outside is frightful, … .”
