Our amazing listeners sent in TONS of photos of the "Sun Dogs" this morning. What is a sun dog, you ask?
Well, a sun dog (or mock sun or parhelion) "is an atmospheric optical phenomenon that consists of a bright spot to one or both sides of the Sun." Wikipedia goes on to explain that this phenomenon is caused by the refraction and scattering of light from ice crystals suspended in the air. You can also notice some rainbow columns near the bright spots that flank the sun. It's a pretty cool phenomenon, don't you think?
So, the next question is where does the term "sun dog" come from? That is a question hasn't been answered yet, but you can check out a few thoughts on where it originated on Wikipedia.
