Detroit Tigers Have Worst Play of the Season just Two Games Into Spring Training

There aren't great expectations for the Detroit Tigers coming into the 2024 MLB season. Last year, they managed to finish second in the AL Central, but still under .500 on the season. They also still had power hitter Miguel Cabrera.

But Miggy is gone, and the Tigers are still expected to finish somewhere in the middle of the pack for the division. However, this play executed by the outfield (and a third of the infield) during Sunday's Spring Training game might be a bad indicator of what's to come this year.

Keeping in mind that the team was only two games into Spring Training, and the players on the field mostly weren't the starting lineup, this is still a pretty embarrassing way to kick off the year, and something that may haunt them for the entire season.

During Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Tigers were actually up 9-4 in the 7th inning with nobody on. Kameron Misner stepped up to the plate to take some pitches from Calvin Coker, and popped the ball up just past the infield into center right.

Should have been an easy catch, but let's see how it played out...

Yeeeeaaaaaahhhhhh... that's... not good. FOUR players surrounded the ball, and nobody got it. Actually, the one that made an effort to TRY and catch it, was the furthest from the ball, laid out about 4 yards short, then accidentally kicked the ball further out into right field... where there WAS NO RIGHT FIELDER because they came in to NOT try and catch the ball. By the way, this resulted in a "stand up" inside-the-park home run from Misner.

This was a rough one, and only two games into Spring Training. The Tigers had already lost 22-10 the day before to the Yankees, then ended this one in a 9-9 tie after leading the game 9-3 in the 6th inning.

Hopefully they get this kind of basic baseball figured out when we get to opening day on March 28th in Chicago against the White Sox.
