A new class of musical legends were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Saturday night in Cleveland, Ohio.

This year’s class included of Ringo Starr, Bill Withers, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Green Day and Lou Reed, so needless to say the ceremony was a star-studded affair.

Among the highlights:

  • Joan Jett and the Blackhearts opened the show with three songs, “Bad Reputation,” “Cherry Bomb” (with a little help from Dave Grohl) and “Crimson and Clover.” Miley Cyrus handled the induction for Jett, calling her “a wonder woman,” and a “Bada** babe on the planet,” while recalling the first time she ever wanted to have sex with Joan. During her speech, Jett called rock and roll “an idea and an ideal,” adding “sometimes we forget the political impact it has on people around the world. ... It's about giving a voice to people who weren't satisfied with whatever box they were put into.”

  • Ringo Starr was finally inducted as a solo artist (the only remaining Beatle not to have that honor), and was welcomed into the HOF by his bandmate Sir Paul McCartney. “I’ve finally been invited and I love it," said the 74-year-old drummer. "I got lucky and it was actually in Cleveland.” which of course got a huge amount of applause. Ringo later performed “Boys,” backed by fellow inductees Green Day, and was then joined by Joe Walsh for “It Don’t Come Easy,” and finally Sir Paul returned for “With A Little Help From My Friends.” The night ended with a jam of “I Wanna Be Your Man,” featuring many of the performers from the entire evening.

  • The night featured a rare performance by Bill Withers, who was encouraged by John Legend to join him and Stevie Wonder at the mic during “Lean on Me.” Wonder also treated the crowd to “Ain’t No Sunshine,” while Legend sang “Use Me Up.” Wonder was the one to welcome Withers into the HOF, which Withers described as, “A lion holding the door for a kitty cat.”

  • New inductees Green Day, who performed “American Idiot,” “When I Come Around,” and “Basket Case,” couldn’t believe they were being into the Hall of Fame with so many of their idols, with Billie Joe Armstrong joking, “I feel like my record collection is sitting here in this room.”

  • Patti Smith choked back tears as she honored the late Lou Reed, while his widow Laurie Anderson accepted on his behalf, sharing Lou’s rules of life, “One: don’t be afraid of anyone; Two: get a really good bullsh*t detector and learn how to use it; Three: be really, really tender.” The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Karen O and Nick Zinner performed Reed’s “Vicious,” while Beck contributed “Satellite of Love.”
