When celebrating the Fourth of July, it seems folks like to listen to some pretty patriotic music, but that’s not all. YouTube just released a list of songs that spike in popularity around the Independence holiday, and there seems to be a good mix of standard patriotic tunes, country songs, pop songs, and more.

The songs seeing the biggest July 4th increase in plays include:

    • "God Bless the U.S.A.” – Lee Greenwood
    • "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)" – Toby Keith
    • “The Star Spangled Banner”/National Anthem
    • “God Bless America”
    • “Yankee Doodle”
    • “Streets of Philadelphia” – Bruce Springsteen
    • https://youtu.be/4z2DtNW79sQ
    • “Hope on the Rocks” – Toby Keith
    • “Firework” – Katy Perry
    • “American Pie” – Don McLean
    • “Party in the U.S.A.” – Miley Cyrus
    • “Teenage Dream” – Katy Perry
    • “Red Solo Cup” – Toby Keith
    • “Fortunate Son” – Creedence Clearwater Revival

The list is fair enough, but they forgot my two favorite songs about America. Simon and Garfunkel's 'America' is a wistful look at youth and grasping the wholeness of this country, plus it gets bonus points for mentioning my home town, Saginaw.

And then there's Arlo Guthrie's version of the beautiful Steve Goodman song, "The City of New Orleans" which uses a train traveling from Chicago through the south as both a metaphor for the growing pains of our country and as a history of the railroad. "Good morning, America, how are you?" Beautiful lyrics.
