With only so many musical notes and chords available, and the competition to produce hit records at an all time high, it's inevitable that a lot of songs begin to sound the same.

And while it's not as telling as this video of country hits being mashed together, Sam Smith's current smash "Stay With Me" is pretty close to Tom Petty's "Won't Back Down".

Tom's co-writer on "Won't Back Down", Jeff Lynne of ELO fame, thought the songs sounded a little too close together, so he advised his lawyers. Now Sam pays some of his royalties to Tom and Jeff.

Funny how that all works out.
