Last week the southeastern portion of the state of Michigan got hit hardest with an ice storm. Some locations received almost 3/4" of ice. It looks like portions of the state will see some ice accumulations to start this week.

Cleaning Up After Last Week's Ice Storm

Power is slowly being restored to residents in the area hit hardest by the ice accumulation last week. As of Sunday morning a large percentage of Consumers Energy customers are still without power:

  • 66% of customers in Hillsdale County
  • 46% of customers in Lenawee County
  • 41% of customers in Washtenaw County
  • 33% of consumers in Jackson County

In Southwest Michigan, Van Buren County still has 35% of their residents without power and 10% of the people living in Kalamazoo county are sitting in the dark.

The estimated restoration times for most of those customers is sometime on Monday, February 27th.

Here Comes More Freezing Rain

Once the utility crews restore all the power to customers in the southern counties, it will be time for them to move north as another wintery and ice storm is headed for West Michigan on Monday.

On Sunday, the National Weather Service posted that...

Additional freezing rain and ice accumulation is expected Monday.

Accumulations should be less than the 3/4" that some areas received last week, but some locations are still looking at possibly getting between 1/4" and nearly 1/2" of ice accumulation.

The areas hit hardest by this new storm look to be from Ludington to Big Rapids to Midland, but even areas as far south as Ottawa, Kent, and Ionia Counties could received some ice accumulations.

The timing of this storm could make the drive home from work on Monday afternoon a challenge. The storm is predicted to hit between Monday morning and the afternoon rush hours.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Monday for most of West Michigan. The advisory calls for "Mixed precipitation expected. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches and ice accumulations of up to two tenths of an inch."

West Michigan Ice Storm Brings Beauty & Carnage To Kalamazoo

The first thing I witnessed this morning was a loud "CRACK" then turning my head to see a tree limb snap off and fall to the ground. It gets so cold and heavy once the ice absorbs into the wood that the limbs just can't take the pressure from the weight and will snap
