There has recently been a rise in newly divorced couples taking selfies to mark the end of their union.

“Divorce Selfies” are described as a “lighthearted way” to let people know they don’t have to feel bad that a couple’s marriage is over.

Going through a divorce is never easy, and for some it’s a happy occasion and others it’s just terrible. Whenever you hear someone say a divorce is amicable you probably question whether that really is true, but for some people it really is, and they’re taking pictures to prove it. Believe it or not, there has apparently been a rise in newly-divorced couples taking selfies to mark the end of their union.

“[It’s] A lighthearted way to announce your divorce in one shot and also let people know that they don’t have to feel awkward around you,” Elise Sole, senior writer for Yahoo Parenting, told ABC News.

For Florida couple Keith Hinson and Michelle Knight, sharing a divorce selfie on Instagram was a way to let people know they were having the “most amicable-easy-going divorce in history.” The pair took the shot outside the courtroom where their divorce happened, and friends have been nothing, but supportive.

The same can be said for Canadian couple Shannon and Chris Neuman, who last week, posted a selfie from outside the Calgary courthouse where they had just ended their 11-year marriage. They posted the picture on Facebook and it quickly went viral, being shared over 36,000 times. Shannon says they posted the picture as a way to show their kids that while they’re not together, they are still on good terms. "I think that they'll recognize that we love them," she said. "We'll always work really hard to be - this makes me cry - to be their parents."

I didn’t want to be in the same room as my ex after my divorce, let alone the same picture.

Did you really have an amicable divorce? If so, did you, or would you, take a “divorce selfie” to remember the occasion?
