One thing that is truly American is film and movies. The movie business started in the late 1910s in Los Angeles, in the Hollywood section of town; and not in England or France or China. Nope, it began right here in the good ol' U.S. of A.

Studio 28 was quite the awesome movie theater. I saw a ton of movies there, and hold a lot of memories there to. Sadly, but understandably, the historical old theater will be demolished within the next few weeks.

Sad news today, as one of the people that helped us grow up disturbed and a little off has died.   Actor, writer, director and producer Harold Ramis of "Ghostbusters" fame died today. There are some many things this guy did to screw us up mentally (in a good way), but I'm going to mention a few that I really like and think you should check out...

The holiday movie season is in full swing already, leaving precious few screens available for anything new. This weekend we only get one big film opening. If you like the previous installments in this franchise, you should probably get a kick out of this one as well.

The holidays are winding down and we head into the new year with new films hitting theaters in 2015. January kicks off with plenty of movie options to help escape the winter blues, although there's only one movie out this New Year's week.

Campy '80s movies are some of the best things ever. I love watching the mind blowing special effects and gruesome scenes that you would only see in graphic horror films today. The West Michigan Whitecaps have a part in the new Will Ferrell movie "Anchorman 2," which is in theaters now. We saw the story on FOX17 on Thursday night. Apparently, a company shot video at Fifth Third Ballpark a few years ago, getting b-roll footage to sell for use in TV shows and movies...

This is great news! This is exactly what downtown needs! The owners of Celebration Cinema are making plans to put an entertainment complex and movie theater downtown by the Van Andel Arena! It will be on the corner of Oakes Street and Ionia Avenue SW, would have tons of screens and space for several restaurants too. It would be where the current city parking lot is now!

"Mickey Matson and the Copperhead Conspiracy" is the latest film to be made in Michigan with big name actors--Christopher Lloyd and Ernie Hudson--to get a premiere here in Grand Rapids. The movie opens at Celebration Cinemas North May 10. The family movie was mostly shot Up North, but stars Middleville's own Derek Brandon ("The Genesis Code" and "The Christmas Bunny")

So this guy named Josh loves to go the movies but  he hates the prices theaters charge for concessions like pop and candy, so he finally snapped! He filed a class action in Wayne County Circuit Court against his local AMC theater in hopes of forcing theaters statewide to dial down snack prices.

Candy Land was one of the first board games I ever remember playing. King Kandy, the Imperial Head Bonbon and Grand Jujube of Candy Land was lost! I'd cross the Ice Cream Sea, hike Gum Drop Mountain and avoid the likes of the evil Lord Licorice to find him! And now, one of my favorite childhood games is coming to the big screen.
